We're sweating through an unprecedented heatwave

If temperatures hit their forecast high over the coming days, it could result in Ireland experiencing it's hottest summer since the Seventies, according to Met Éireann.

The National Forecaster is predicting temperatures between 24 and 27 degrees Today, remaining high into the evening with lowest temperatures of between 12 to 16 degrees.

The Met has even issued a National Status Yellow warning for high temperatures valid from 6am this morning until 9pm on Friday.

Pat Clarke from Met Éireann says a warning like this is rare for Ireland.

"Basically, temperatures are going to continue to rise this week - around 27 degrees or so today and they will be in the high-20s in subsequent days," said Mr Clarke.

"It's a rolling kind of a warning and it will be updated every day. It's just to flag that it has been warm but it is going to get warmer."

Warning

Meanwhile, Health Minister Simon Harris has urged the public to check in on elderly or isolated neighbours and make sure babies or children are not left alone in cars.

The Department of Agriculture has an orange fire warning in place and the HSE has issued essential heatwave advice as temperatures continue to soar.

And if you are working outside in the sun, you're reminded to wear sun-cream, take breaks and stay hydrated.

Forecast

Sun, sun and sun.

Tomorrow will be hot with sunshine, with top temperatures generally between 25 and 28 degrees.

And there's more where that came from, writing on it's website Met Éireann said:

''Mostly sunny from Wednesday to Friday inclusive, but the sunshine is likely to be hazy in nature at times, due to some high clouds. Daytime temperatures are expected to be in the mid to high twenties quite widely, possibly a little higher locally on some days.''

Looks like we're in for some good times... Just remember to play it smart in the sun.

Sun-cream, hat, shades, water and you'll be grand!
