The alleged incident is said to have taken place at the weekend.

A claim that a famous Irish sports star allegedly raped a woman in Dublin is being investigated by Gardai, reports The Independent.

It's understood the woman, in her 20s, was allegedly attacked in a hotel room after socialising with friends in south Dublin.

The man has not yet been arrested but sources sighted by The Independent revealed the allegation made by the woman is being considered “extremely credible”.

The alleged sexual assault is believed to have happened between 11:30pm on Sunday and 3:30am on Monday.

She was then taken to the Rotunda Hospital's Sexual Assault Treatment Unit.

Officers at Pearse Street Garda Station are investigating the incident that is believed to have happened at a city centre hotel.

A source sighted by the Irish Mirror said: "The woman turned up at a south Dublin garda station and made a complaint of rape.

"Officers then took her to the SATU at the Rotunda Hospital for an examination.

"The case was then transferred to gardai at Pearse Street as the incident is alleged to have taken place at a hotel in the city centre.

"A team of officers under senior gardai are carrying out investigations.

"They'll have to check for CCTV footage and the possible crime scene.

"It allegedly happened between 11:30pm and 3:30am after she went to a hotel room with the alleged attacker."

Investigations continue.

Meanwhile a garda spokesperson told the same publication: "Gardaí at Pearse Street, Dublin 2 are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a female which occurred in Dublin 2 in the early hours of this morning, Monday December 10th 2018.

"No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing."
