Gardai spotted the man speeding towards the North wearing only his underpants.
A semi-naked Dublin based hitman was stopped by gardai as he made a break for the border, recently.
Gardai accosted the suspect after they were spotted speeding towards the North wearing only his underpants.
The arrest happened soon after a man was injured in a shooting at a halting site in Drogheda, Co Louth.
A source said: “This man is well known to gardai and has previously been a suspect in a number of shootings.
“He is operating as a gun for hire, is out of control and is liable to do anything.”
The hitman was suspected to have been involved in a shooting at Priorswood in Coolock, North Dublin, which was linked to an ongoing gang feud.
A gunman is believed to have gone into a house linked to a well-known gangland figure.
