Additional bedding has been provided for Rough sleepers in Galway City in preparation for Storm Emma

Cope Galway is confident the majority of rough sleepers in Galway have been accounted for, and are safe, ahead of the horrendous conditions Storm Emma is set to bring.

However, the Social Services Organisation says there is still a small number of rough sleepers who have chosen to remain outdoors.

Speaking to iRadio.ie, Assistant CEO of Cope Galway Martin O’Connor said an additional 31-emergency accommodation beds have been made available to homeless people around the city since the end of November.

''We're very confident the majority of rough sleepers have been accounted for,'' he said.

''Every contact we're aware of has been followed up. Those in accommodation are safeguarded and have sufficient space.''

However, Mr. O'Connor acknowledged a number of homeless people have chosen to remain outside, despite being made aware of the accommodation available to them.

''There are a small number of rough sleepers remaining outside, sleeping in tents and areas not suitable for the conditions.

''We are aware of their location, and we have made sure Gardai are also aware of the location of these individuals.

We've been out to these people and provided them with extra bedding and blankets.''

Mr. O'Connor also had the following advice for anyone who should happen to come across a rough sleeper in the following hours.

''The first thing to do is make sure they know there is services that are available to them, and alert Gardai of their location,'' he said.

He also advised people to report the sighting to the 24/7 Cope Galway hotline on: 085 800 9641.

While anyone who desires, can provide them with hot drinks, bedding or sleeping bags.
