''The beast from the East'' will cause havoc this week

Met Eireann is warning the entire Country to brace itself for cold the likes of which many of us have never seen before.

The national forecaster has issued a status yellow weather warning for severe cold, ice and snow, valid from tomorrow until Saturday.

While it's likely that warning will be upgraded to Status Red later in the week.

The Met said, ''Exceptionally cold weather will occur this week. Air and ground temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees below normal, with significant wind chill and penetrating severe frosts.''

It's expected that mid-week temperatures will drop to the lowest levels seen in Ireland since 1982. While up to 30-40cm of snow is set to fall in parts of Leinster, east Ulster and southeast Munster.

Here's a little taste of the bitter conditions we can expect:

  • Tonight - Very cold and frosty -2 to -5 C.
  • Tuesday - Top temperatures 3 to 6 C
  • Wednesday - Top temperatures only -1 to +2 C. Frost, ice and lying snow persisting through the day.
  • Wednesday Night -  -5 and -7 degrees. Yeah...
  • Thursday - Top temperatures just -1 to +1 C. However, the stiff and gusty easterly wind will make it feel colder (as if it wasn't going to feel cold enough already...)
  • Friday - Baltic. We assume.

Ok, we don't know about you, but that kind of makes us want to cry...

Obviously with the severe conditions, motorists are advised to take extreme care on the roads and to stay indoors if at all possible.
