Body discovered in the search for missing swimmer in Co Galway

A body has been found following a search for a missing swimmer off the coast of Galway.

The body was spotted in shallow water, at around 10:15am today, near Salthill by rescue chopper 115.

Alarms were raised on Thursday evening at 5pm, when a 40-year-old man, got into distress off Blackrock.

The body - believed to be a local man - was recovered by a lifeboat and transferred to Galway University Hospital.

The search operation was co-ordinated by Valentia Coast Guard Coordination Centre with assistance from gardai.

Pending formal identification of the body, the search will cease.
