And the results showed that 41 per cent of the participants have experienced postcoital dysphoria at some stage, with 20 per cent saying it had happened in the last four weeks.
The researchers asked some of the men how exactly how they felt after sex, and responses included:
‘I feel unsatisfied, annoyed and very fidgety’ and ‘I feel emotionless and empty’.
The findings suggest that the male experience of sex could be more complex than previously thought.
Professor Robert Schweitzer, co-author of the study, said: “The first three phases of the human sexual response cycle - excitement, plateau, and orgasm - have been the focus of the majority of research to date.
"The experience of the resolution phase remains a bit of a mystery and is therefore poorly understood.”
