On the plus side, temperatures are set to rise again next week

In the wake of the carnage caused by Storm Hector this week, Met Eireann has warned of yet more heavy rain and a risk of thunder on the way later today.

Although, there is some good news on the horizon with warmer and dryer conditions forecast for the not to distant future.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Forecaster Aoife Murray said: “There will be wind on Friday but it won’t be as strong as Thursday. It’ll be cloudier and there’ll be some scattered outbreaks of rain, most frequent in the west of the country."

The latest forecast from Met Eireann reads: "Mostly dry and bright in the east and south at first today with some sunshine.

"But overall rather cloudy with scattered showers in the west and north spreading elsewhere by this afternoon, with the wettest conditions expected over the northern half of the country.

"Highest temperatures will range from 13C in the northwest to 17C in the southeast. Moderate southwest breezes will increase fresh to strong along Atlantic coasts by evening time."

However, tonight will see heavy rain with a risk of thunder.

"Rain will become persistent along the Atlantic Seaboard later this evening and early tonight.

"The rain, locally heavy and accompanied by a slight risk of thunder, will extend eastwards overnight, with clear spells and scattered showers following from the west before dawn.

"Lows of 8C to 11C. Mainly moderate southwest to west winds inland, but increasingly fresh to strong and gusty near coasts," according to the Met.

There is hope though!

By the time Sunday roles around, things will start heating up again, with highs of 20C expected.

A forecaster said: "Cloudy with patchy outbreaks of light rain and drizzle. Becoming drier by evening, with some late brightness developing for southern areas.
