Lost Irish documents dating from the 14th Century have been restored

Thousands of records destroyed by fire in the Public Record Office of Ireland in Dublin have been digitally restored.

The fire, which broke out in 1922 totally consumed valuable documents dating back as far the 14th Century, and famously destroyed the building.

However, thanks to the marvel's of the digital age, a team from Trinity College has been able to virtually reconstruct the building and it's contents.

Meaning people now have the opportunity to gain valuable insights into how Irish life was lived all those Centuries ago.

Speaking to Breaking News.ie, Head of the Beyond 2022: Ireland’s Virtual Record Treasury project, Peter Crooks said:

"This is the archive of the State in Ireland from the 14th Century, roughly, all the way up until 1922, so almost every aspect of Irish life was contained inside the building when it went on fire.

"That's Government, law, crime, births, marriages, parish registers - so it's really something that will reach out into every aspect of Irish life and across the islands."

What a great achievement!
