The Westport to Turlough road, has been officially opened by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
The most expensive stretch of road ever constructed in County Mayo officially opened today.
The Westport to Turlough road, was opened by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, shortly after 10.30am this morning.
The Taoiseach was joined by Councillor Seamus Weir, cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, project partners and elected representatives
It's estimated to have cost 300 million Euro.
The Westport to Turlough N5 Road Project is a 25.7km roadway that comprises of 20.3 kilometres of type two dual carriageway.
It runs from northwest of Westport at Deerpark East to the townland of Ballyneggin, near Turlough, and connects with the existing N5.
The completion of this sees the conclusion of the largest infrastructural project ever undertaken in the county.
It took over three years to complete.
The scheme will bring a range of benefits including, the reduction of traffic congestion in Castlebar and Westport, along with improved connectivity
It will also improve road safety for vulnerable road users in those areas.
