Gardaí believe the car fire that killed two children in Co Westmeath, was started maliciously.

Lynn Egar and her two-year-old son, Michael, and five-year-old daughter, Thelma, were in the vehicle when it became engulfed in flames.

It happened on a rural road in Multyfarnham on Friday afternoon - and G

Gardaí suspect it was an arson attack.

The Irish Times crime correspondent, Conor Lally, says the blaze ended in tragedy:

"So Lynn Egar and the young boy were actually out of the vehicle when Gardaí arrived, but unfortunately Thelma was effectively trapped in the car and her remains were found in the vehicle when the blaze was brought under control."

"Michael was brought off to hospital nearby but unfortunately he was pronounced dead there on Friday evening and Lynn Egar was lifted from the scene and is still recovering in hospital."
