The tragedy happened in Russia.

A 15-year-old girl has tragically died after being hit by a train in Orsk, Russia.

Karina Baymukhambetova was killed instantly over weekend when she was struck by a freight-train while taking a selfie on the tracks.

It's reported that a male relative who was with her at the time managed to jump to safety before the train struck.

Local media East2west reports that the train driver tried to slow down and alert the girl.

"The train driver spotted people on the railway line and sounded his horn,” said the report.

"He applied the train’s emergency brakes but failed to stop the train in time to avoid a tragedy.

"The boy managed to jump away, but the girl was not so lucky and was hit by the train which cut her body into pieces."

Transport police senior youth liaison inspector, Denis Khnykin, has since issued a warning to young people about the dangers of railway tracks.

"I ask you to pay your attention once again and to warn your relatives," he said.

"Please remind them of the fact that railways are dangerous both for your health and life."

Orsk social policy chief, Elena Zaporozhskaya, said: "Children need to be able to say ‘no’ when something is risky for their life and health."

"I want parents to know where their children are and with whom they are spending time.

''People must protect the lives and health of their children."
