The number of men undergoing a vasectomy in Ireland has increased massively in recent years.

Vasectomies have long been associated with middle-aged fathers, but clinicians nationwide have reported a growing demand from younger men who do not have children.

One clinic reported a tenfold increase in patients under 35 seeking the procedure over the past five years.

The practice is becoming more common as the surgery has become non invasive and it becomes more socially acceptable to be childless.

Since January, two dozen childless men under 35 have had vasectomies.

Dr. John McCormick of Vasectomy Ireland says mental health issues, financial worries and climate concerns have all been given as reasons why men are getting the snip.

Dr. McCormick has been performing the surgery on an increasing number of child free men aged between 21 and 35 since 2018:

"I've seen several men over the years with a history of mental illness thats been difficult to control. One guy said to me, I can barely look after myself, how am I going to look after any children that I might have?"

He says you have to be very sure that it's the right move for you:

"You can get vasectomies reversed but they don't always work and it's a bigger procedure. You can also have a sperm extraction procedure done."
