"The student who proposed the app said that consent couldn't be revoked - you couldn't change your mind."

Some UCD students say they're angry over a proposal for a consent app.

On Monday, students in the college's School of Computer Science received an email from a fourth year medicine student asking for help in developing the app.

The email explained that the app would allow people planning to have sex to electronically sign a pre-made contract.

It also said it would help "fight the ever growing fear of men being sued post-intercourse".

UCD Student Union's Gender Equality Officer, Jade Wilson, says the email sent to hundreds of people is "disturbing".

Speaking to Louise on The Hub, Jade said the app isn't about consent - it's about protecting men:

"The student who proposed the app said that consent couldn't be revoked - you couldn't change your mind.

"When you boil it down, it's clear that people still grossly misunderstand how consent works, or they choose to just disregard it.

"The app is based entirely on misogyny. This narrative that they're trying to push about thousands of men's lives being ruined every year by false allegations is just completely untrue, and it's definitely adding to rape culture and preventing people from coming forward.

"I don't think that they care about preventing rape or caring about women's safety."

Jade says that she'd like to see UCD bring in mandatory consent classes in response to the controversy.

The university has apologised after the student used its internal email list.

The School of Computer Science says it will review their approval process so something like this doesn't happen again.

Meanwhile, Noeline Blackwell from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre has described the proposed app as "illegal and harmful".
