Under half of the 400 thousand people entitled to claim the rental tax credit have done so.
The measure, which was announced as part of Budget 2023, allows tenants paying rent in private accommodation to claim a 500 euro credit.
However a survey shows issues linked to landlords are the reason almost half of Ireland’s tenants haven't claimed it.
Marian Ryan from Taxback.com says if a landlord isn’t registered with the RTB, many people will miss out.
'A lot of renters are hitting a wall when it comes to applying for the credit. The main reason for it is that their landlords isn't registered with the RTB or they're afraid to contact the landlord to see if they are registered with the RTB, so they don't have the RTB registration number and so they're afraid to even apply for the refund themselves.'
