Three new farming apprenticeships has been unveiled by the government.

The Farm Manager, Farm Technician, and Horticulture trainee courses will offer the opportunity for students to develop skills in the daily operations of a commercial farm and build a career in farming.

The apprenticeships - the first of which will begin next month - will last for two years.

Higher Education Minister Simon Harris is enthusiastic about what this scheme could do for Irish farming, saying "this is really going to provide pathways and opportunities for the next generation of people who wish to work in farming, who wish to work in agriculture, who wish to work in horticulture".

Harris also went on to say he was delighted "that the IFA have supported this initiative as well because I think it's really important for the future of farming in Ireland".
