Thousands of people are expected to brave the elements for the first day of the National Ploughing Championships today.

The annual, three-day event will see people from all corners of the country make their way to Ratheniska, County Laois.

The site is made up of 17 hundred exhibits, where you can find anything from machinery to makeup.

Those who plan on going are being advised to follow signs and not Google Maps or a sat nav to get to the car parks.

The NPA is also advising people to book online in advance if possible.

Anna Marie McHugh from the National Ploughing Association says they're encouraging advance booking so nobody is disappointed.

'There might be ten thousand tickets not sold, there might be.  If there is, then ten thousand ticket will be on the gate and we have 3 gates that are cash and card and 6 gates that are just card, but do you take that chance, do you drive 3 hours and maybe you're the one person over the number, and the gates close.  We don't want that for anybody either.'
