''It was a crime against this girl's religious identity''.

Investigations are underway after a Muslim teenager was attacked in Dublin on Sunday.

The 17 year old allegedly had her hijab torn off her while being assaulted by a group in Dundrum village.

Minister for Culture Josepha Madigan has condemned the attack.

While spokesperson for the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland, Dr Ali Selim said the community is shocked

''It was a crime against this girl's religious identity, as well as the long cherished Irish norm of cohesiveness, Dr. Selim said.

''It was a hate crime, and there is a desperate need now for hate crime legislation, something we didn't need in the past.

''But the current diversity of the Irish society makes it a must.''
