The government must get real about addressing the teacher shortage crisis.
The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland said the crisis is undermining children’s and young people’s education and must be addressed as a matter of urgency
Recent figures from the Association found three quarters of schools reported that they had received no applications for an advertised teaching post in the 2022/23 school year while 81 per cent said they had to employ at least one unqualified teacher during the year.
ASTI President Geraldine O'Brien said the profession is no longer an attractive employment proposition:
"The difficulty is the attractiveness of the teaching profession and while it's not a recent problem, it has been there for a number of years."
"But it's now currently at its worst. The housing difficulties, the cost of living, teachers' workload, and the fact that schools are starved of essential resources."
