The US Navy apparently detected the sound of the catastrophic implosion, which destroyed the missing Titan submersible, soon after it went missing on Sunday.

Five people died while on board the deep-sea vessel which was visiting the Titanic wreck.

An American military official now suggests an existing system of navy sonars heard a noise consistent with an implosion.

Rear Admiral John Mauger, who led the US Coast Guard's search, suggested it would have been loud enough:

"This was a catastrophic implosion in the vessel, which would have generated a significant broadband sound down there that sonar buoys would have picked up."
