The government will consider getting rid of the three thousand euro student contribution fee for 100 thousand students in the budget.

According to the Irish Times, it's included in a paper looking at the cost of going to college, published by the Department of Further and Higher Education.

The paper includes several options which may improve the financial burden for students, including the formation of an emergency accommodation fund, and increasing the SUSI grant by 25 per cent.

What is the student contribution fee?

According to Citizen's Information:

Most colleges charge an annual student contribution, formerly called the student services charge.

It is also known as a registration fee and it covers student services and examinations.

The amount of the contribution varies from one institution to another.
