The warning is valid until 10 o'clock tonight for Munster, Connacht and eight other counties.
Met Éireann says the thunderstorms will cause localised flooding and difficult driving conditions.
However for the week ahead - Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather says it's not all bad news:
'The first half of the week will continue unsettled.'
'Temperatures still up to 22 degrees so above normal for this time of year.'
'Some heavy showers but good sunny spells also, so it will be lovely between the showers.'
