A journalist and radio station have been fined for broadcasting the name of one of the boys convicted of Ana Kriegel's murder.
Irish Daily Mirror Crime Editor Niall O'Connor has been fined €2,500 while Cork's Red FM has to pay €10,000 for contempt of court.
About ten minutes into a live interview with Neil Prendeville on the 19th of June- a day after the verdict journalist Niall O’Connor revealed the identity of Boy A - who was convicted of murdering Ana Kriegel -twice before he was cut off by the broadcaster.
Lawyers for the radio station told the court there was an immediate realisation a mistake had been made and apologised.
Mr O’Connor apologised to the court today saying “my brain just slipped”.
He added “there was no way I intended to do this”.
The DPP who initiated contempt proceedings against Mr OConnor and Red FM acknowledged care was taken by the interviewer and interview.
However, it claimed the incident shows the pressure of live broadcasting without a safety net.
Red FM CEO Diarmuid O’Leary told the court they’ve now reinstalled a Dump button which allows a delay when broadcasting live material.
Mr Justice McDermott fined Mr O'Connor €2,500 and RedFM €10,000.
