The national forecaster predicts that ice and snow will stick as the day progresses.

It's been a chilly few days as temperatures have dropped below freezing temperatures recently.

This morning, a lot of ice and lying snow is visible in many areas around the country.

Snow is affecting parts of Monaghan, Galway, Westmeath, Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim this morning.

A Status Yellow snow/ice warning was due to be in place until midday.

Due to temperatures staying near zero or below, the warning been extended for the entire country until 7pm.

The forecaster has also issued a Status Yellow low temperature warning, which will take effect from 7pm and run until 10 tomorrow morning.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather is warning of caution on roads and footpaths.

"Anything that falls is likely to freeze which will lead for treacherous driving and even conditions walking on footpaths."

AA Roadwatch Deputy Editor, Lauren Beehan, says snowfall is particularly bad around Monaghan Town and Clontibret.

She also said snowfall has caused difficult conditions in the Clifden area of Galway.
