The Higher Education Minister says the drip-feed of information about RTE has to stop.

Simon Harris says it’s been a bad few days for the broadcaster after details about exit packages for senior executives were revealed.

RTE’s Director General Kevin Bakhurst says elected officials are asking him to break the law if he disclosed certain information.

But Minister Harris says they’re not asking for that.

"The last number of days have been corrosive, they have been a bad number of days at the office. It's important that today things are done to stabilise that situation."

Minister Harris explained that "the focus needs to be on what can be done and not what can't be done, and we don't need any kind of distractions. Members of the Oireachtas are not asking anyone to break the law. Members of the Oireachtas are asking RTE to help do a really important job in restoring confidence in the institution."
