An expert in gender studies has described a Senator Rónán Mullen's comments on conversion therapy as disturbing and dangerous.
The independent senator and County Galway native says the practice, which attempts to turn gay people straight, should be allowed unless there is proof it's harmful.
The UN Committee Against Torture is among a number of groups that say the practice leads to depression, homelessness and suicide, and there are calls for the senator to withdraw his remarks.
UCD assistant professor, Doctor Mary McAuliffe, says there is endless evidence to suggest it is harmful:
"This is not up for debate. This is not an argument that has both sides.
The American Psychological Association and most psychological associations and medical professionals around the world say this lacks medical justification and is a threat to people's well-being, and to their mental health, their emotional well-being, and their health. (sic)"
