In the week ahead, public transport will run and schools will remain open, despite the freezing temperatures.

The National Emergency Coordination Group gave encouraging news after their meeting in Dublin today.

They say they're ''confident services won't be affected'' by the cold snap.

But there have been flight disruptions and hazardous driving conditions.

A status yellow warning has been extended until Friday.

While a status orange low-temperature warning is in place for the country until midday tomorrow.

Speaking at the event at Agricultural House today, Minister Darragh O'Brien had this advice:

"Public transport, schools, all of that, no issue in that regard. But we just ask people to be aware of the particularly cold temperatures that will come in over the course of the week.

"Remain safe, remain warm, and be careful on the roads."

The Government also give this advice:

  • Driving conditions will be hazardous with black ice, freezing temperatures, and freezing fog. Slow down and be aware of other road users allow extra time and drive with caution.
  • Take extra care while walking: footpaths etc. can be extremely hazardous/slippery due to ice.
  • Check on vulnerable and isolated neighbours.
  • Keep your phone charged and take it with you on all journeys. In an emergency dial 999 or 112.

The website www.winterready.ie  also provides advice on preparing for severe weather.

Minister O'Brien also advised us to check in on our neighbours, especially keeping an eye out for our elderly neighbours.

CEO of the charity Alone, Sean Moynihan, is asking the community to lend a hand where possible.

As older people need to take extra care during the cold snap.

Mr. Moynihan says they should prioritise heat and stay warm, for the coming week.
