The secondary school year should run for a month longer.

That's the view of one teacher, who says running until the end of June would reduce the 'breakneck pace of the school year'.

Schools run until the end of May, a month earlier than primary schools.

Teacher and Irish Times columnist Jennifer Horgan believes it would benefit teachers, students and parents:

"Even though we have longer holidays, we have more contact time with students. So what I'd love to see is a slower school day where students have study periods so they're not bringing home hours of homework for instance."

Students have study periods and teachers have time to plan and we sort of ease ourselves and have a nice paced and relaxed atmosphere, I think that would serve everybody."
