Newstalk reports, Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee has received Cabinet approval.
The maximum penalty for this offence is an unlimited fine or a prison sentence of up to ten years.
The legislation would allow for the retrospective use of facial recognition technology when gardaí are searching CCTV footage.
Gardaí have wanted to use it for some time as it will speed up their investigations.
