The Housing Minister is looking to increase the renter's tax credit to nearly 800 euro per person.

Darragh O'Brien outlined his plans for the upcoming budget in an interview with the Irish Independent.

The Fianna Fáil minister also said he's keen to extend the Help to Buy scheme and introduce income-based tax breaks for landlords.

CEO of construction marketing firm Property District, Carol Tallon says the renter's credit isn't enough:

"The reality is that rent at the moment is crippling people and while this is welcome and almost every week I've been calling for a greater tax credit for renters - this is not enough and it's not enough alone.

"Actually, I think we need something much more radical if we want to actually help the current generation who are stuck in rentals."
