The first ever 'All-Island Strategic Rail Review' will be published by the end of the month.
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan says he expects to bring a memo to Cabinet on the matter in two weeks time.
It'll outline the recommended and assessed rail-lines which could be re-opened across the whole island of Ireland.
Minister Ryan says moves are already being made, in anticipation of a re-established Atlantic Railway Corridor:
"The week after next we expect to publish it so that we can do a strategic environment assessment and that will allow the public to see the plans we have."
"It's already starting, we're reopening the rail line from Foynes to Limerick in anticipation of a longer rail corridor but come back to me in a week and a half and I'll go into real detail on it."
