Nearly half of parents are not aware the government introduced free primary school books for pupils for the coming school year.
Figures form the Irish League of Credit Unions have revealed that parents are spending 1,152 Euro per primary school student which was slightly less than there were spending last year.
There was also a decrease in secondary schools costs with parents paying 1,288 Euro down 230 euro on the 2022
CEO, Irish League of Credit Unions David Malone, said schools need to ensure parents are aware that primary schools books are being provided at no cost:
"It's really surprising from the survey itself, nearly 50% of parents were not aware of the free primary school books scheme itself. "
"I think schools will need to do a better job in terms of communicating that to parents. On top of that as well, more than 90% of our survey respondents said they would ask seek the free book scheme to be extended to secondary school."n m
