The President made his comments to mark the end of UN Global Goals week
President Michael D. Higgins is calling on the international community to treat global starvation as its number one priority.
He says the connection between climate change and hunger needs to be addressed immediately.
The President made his comments in a statement issued today to mark the end of UN Global Goals week.
President Higgins described the current hunger crisis in east Africa as one of the cataclysmic proportions.
With a death occurring every 48 seconds in drought-ravaged Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
The President added that the impact of changing climate together with the ongoing drought has devastated crops, lost animals, and destroyed livelihoods.
These factors, he said, have forced 100 million people to leave their homes leading to a huge increase in displaced persons.
The President has accused the most powerful in the World of not recognising or showing a willingness to change.
Stating that their lack of action is contributing to repeated food insecurities.
