Government ministers have been discussing the proposed new laws today.
Cabinet ministers have approved plans to make revenge porn a criminal offence.
They have made the decision at a special cabinet meeting that was held in Cork, giving permission to draft changes to a bill brought by Labour party leader Brendan Howlin.
It would make revenge porn, upskirting and stalking specific criminal offences.
Deputy Howlin has welcomed the move, saying it is badly needed:
"I think it's an area of criminal law that is crying out for action and I think it's a very unreported and probably unfocused upon area of real harm being done. It has a number of elements to it - it is the harassment of people, the bullying of people, particularly younger people online, driving people to suicide and I've had very many individuals talk to me about that."
