84 per cent of parents believe mobile phones should be banned in both primary and secondary schools.
A 'Back to School' survey by the Irish League of Credit Unions found that over-use and the amount of time spent on phones were the biggest concerns parents have about their child.
However primary school parents say their child was an average of 10 years and 7 months old when they got their first phone, while for secondary students it was 13 and a half.
23 per cent of parents worry about their child accessing inappropriate content, 19 per cent worry their child will be bullied.
Depite that the survey found 62 per cent of parents say their child owns a mobile.
