People living in direct provision are having to pay for food and medical care out of small weekly allowances.
That's according to a new survey published by the Irish Refugee Council, which found 90 per cent of families are unable to meet basic needs.
At the moment, adults are entitled to 38 euro 80 cent per week, and 29 euro 80 per child.
Nick Henderson, CEO of the Irish Refugee Council says they shouldn't have to use the payment for essentials, supposed to be provided by the State.
Henderson says the money is being spent on food, transport, hygiene and medical care.
