Pensioners and local authority tenants will not lose their medical card if they rent a room to college students.

Government has approved the extension of the income disregard for the Rent A Room scheme, which now also extends it to local authority tenants.

The weekly gross medical card income threshold is currently 550 euro a week for single people and 1,050 for couples.

Fine Gael Senator for Limerick, Maria Byrne says it's positive for students and pensioners:

'The good news is that social welfare, education, and health came together.'

'People who want to rent a room to students, or their next-door neighbour, or whoever can rent a room for up to 14 thousand a year.'
