Plans to revamp laws around penalty points is not the solution to current road safety issues, according to a transport expert.
It's after Junior Minister Jack Chambers said he wanted to fix an "anomaly" in current legislation, and wants drivers to be given penalty points for cumulative offences.
At the moment, drivers who commit two or more offences at once will be given penalty points for the most serious one.
Transport expert Conor Faughnan believes changing the law is not the right approach:
"A lot of people hate the 'Gatso' cameras, but to be fair on a road safety analysis, they're actually a very useful tool, a more useful tool than yet another new law."
"Every time we have a peak in road safety and it gets public attention, the Minister of the day thinks up a new law."
"That's something you can announce, it's looks like you're doing something about it, but in reality, we've got a good set of laws, we need to enforce the ones we've got."
