Hard pressed households will be paying more for waste disposal after two companies announced they were hiking their fees.

From the beginning of July Greyhound Recycling will increase waste disposal charges to customers by 3 Euro per month.

The company's blamed the price hike on rising operations costs.

Panda Waste has also announced an increase to its quarterly collection fees, resulting in an annual increase of 32 Euro for customers.

People Before Profit's Richard Boyd Barrett says private ownership of companies like this, isn't in the public interest:

'It's absolutely imperative we take waste services back into public ownership.'

'If you're charging for recycling then people have no incentive to do that whatsoever.'
