Campaigners continue '24-hour' presence at proposed direct provision center in Galway

Campaigners are continuing a '24-hour' presence outside a proposed Direct Provision Centre in Oughterard in County Galway.

It's after 3,000 people joined a silent protest yesterday at a former hotel outside the town.

Campaigners say they aren't opposed to the presence of refugees, but rather the Direct Provision system.

They also say residents in the area were given no consultation on the establishment of a Direct Provision Centre in the town.

Local Independent Councillor Thomas Welby says the protest is not about racism.

He says it's a planning issue - and the community is determined to be heard:
