The survey by GoCar also showed 40% of car trips take 14 minutes or less.
However, 78% of drivers would hang onto their cars to go shopping.
Only 27% of those surveyed said they were familiar with car sharing services.
Meanwhile, 70% of participants said they would be more likely to get rid of their car if public transport was better.
RTÉ reports that among those who are in favour of giving up their car, 41% said they would like to cycle or walk more.
The research also found that a fifth of respondents have two or more cars, with 28% of those having children.
Around 50% said they need an second car for transporting family, while over than a third need it for work.
