One in five people in Ireland suffer from hay fever.

Research from the Asthma Society of Ireland also found nearly 80 percent of those with asthma will also be affected by the allergic reaction.

Common causes of hay fever include excessive pollen from flowers, trees, grass, as well as fungi spores.

Some symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, headaches, itchy throat and a general sick feeling.

Pharmacist Laura Dowling says it can be triggered any time of the year:

"The tree pollen is more during the spring, the grass pollen is late spring/early summer, and the weed pollen is late autumn.

"It can also be animal dander which can trigger an allergic response; like itchy eyes, streaming eyes, sneezing and they can also get itchy mouth, ears and nose too.

"The symptoms can make people feel miserable"
