Some businesses will partake in an alcohol ban on St Patrick's Day in Dublin city centre.

No alcohol will be served in off-licences or supermarkets until after 4pm on Friday by certain premises.

It's understood most pubs will stay open for the duration of the day from 12pm.

Gardaí say it's in order to make it an 'enjoyable experience for everyone'.

Spectators will also be limited around the Temple Bar area in case of overcrowding.

It's expected close to half a million people will descend on the streets for the St Patrick's Day parade.

Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Gardaí said local premises had a significant say in bringing forward the ban.
