The decision follows last month's mosque shootings in Christchurch.
New Zealand's parliament has voted to change gun laws in the country, in response to the attacks on two mosques in the city of Christchurch on March 15th.
Brenton Tarrant, a suspected white supremacist, was charged with 50 murders after the shootings.
All but one member of the house voted for the gun reform bill which bans most semi-automatic weapons.
It must now receive royal assent from the governor general before it officially becomes law.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has been widely praised for her response to the tragedy, issuing a strong condemnation of it, visiting Christchurch and promising action on gun laws.
What has happened in Christchurch is an extraordinary act of unprecedented violence. It has no place in New Zealand. Many of those affected will be members of our migrant communities – New Zealand is their home – they are us.
