A review has recommended scrapping the rule where students have to choose the school closest to their house in order to get State funded transport.

It also advices reducing the distance rule, with the changes being discussed by Cabinet this morning.

Assistant Principal and Aontu's education spokesperson Eric Nelligan believes unless there is a recruitment campaign for drivers, then current capacity issues will continue.

'Not only are the prices staying the same, there's also a proposal that the distance a student lives away from the school will be dropped, so at the moment it's almost 5 kilometres for second level students and that will drop to 2.   For primary students it's around 3 kilometres and that will drop to one.  That will vastly increase the number of students and the number of children that will be able to take the bus.'
