Almost four in ten women who experienced sexual violence as an adult didn't tell anyone because they felt ashamed or embarrassed.
That's according to the latest data from the Central Statistics Office's Sexual Violence Survey.
It reveals that 36% of women who did not disclose any experience of sexual violence as an adult did so because they felt ashamed or embarrassed.
22% of women surveyed said they did not tell anyone what happened because they were under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the sexual violence experience happened.
Another 4% of women said they did not tell anyone about their experience because they did not want to go to court.
