New legislation to criminalise sex-for-rent offers has been published today by Sinn Féin.
The Bill comes after RTÉ Investigates last week broadcast a report looking into sex for rent in Ireland.
The investigation showed how some landlords have been exploiting the housing crisis by offering vulnerable women accommodation in return for sex.
Sinn Féin housing spokesperson, Eoin Ó Broin, says seeking sex for rent should be outlawed.
He said: "The legislation published today would make it an offence under the Residential Tenancies Act for a landlord either to seek sex in lieu of rent or to advertise this arrangement on social media platforms.
"What we are trying to do is to prevent these type of arrangements from taking hold, and therefore, I would be hopeful that Government will work with us to ensure this appalling practice is outlawed as a matter of urgency."
