Just eight NCT centres in the country have an available booking before September.

There are calls for an NCT cert to be valid for two years, no matter how old the car is.

Members of Cork County Council are going to write to the Transport Minister Eamon Ryan, saying the move would help clear current backlogs.

Centres are continuing to struggle with backlogs in the system, with most having no dates for at least six months.

Independent Councillor John Healy says many cars tested annually would be roadworthy:

"Vehicle defects is less than one percent in all accidents no matter what age the car is", he claims.

The majority of NCT centres don't have a booking available until November, while eight of them won't have dates until 2024.
