Most people are setting unrealistic goals as they make New Year resolutions.

That's according to the national mental health charity Turn2me, who are encouraging people to aim for progress and not perfection.

The organisation says by setting out such high standards often leads to disappointment and failure.

Fiona O'Malley from Turn2Me says people should consider taking up a new course. Recommending starting "something new instead of giving something up" urging people to "consider joining a part time course or signing up for an art or a writing or a hiking group". Fiona adds that "New Year's is a good time for new beginnings and it doesn't have to mean radical detoxes, rigid diets or complete lifestyle changes."
