Students get an extra 25 points for sitting higher level maths for the Leaving Cert.
The number of students sitting higher level maths for their Leaving Cert has doubled in the past decade.
It was roughly 18 percent in 2012, but rose to 36 percent last year.
Students who opt to take on the higher level maths papers secure 25 bonus points.
Taking the risk to sit the papers is a positive, according to one grinds teacher.
Stephen Easley Walsh - of Maths Grinds dot ie - says some students fail, but others benefit from the bonus CAO points:
"There are students who might've been inclined not to take it when they could have and the bonus points has tempted them. It's not as clear cut".
